At our January General Meeting Nils Jacobsen, our VP of Overseas diving, along with Kathi McCutchen, presented the overseas trips scheduled for 2008 and beyond. Nils also shared with us a slide show of the 2007 trips. On our home page you can click on “Dive Trips” to view the 2008 schedule. Don’t miss reading Nils’ Overseas Diving column in this newsletter about the trips we are looking forward to, even into 2009.

At the January Board Meeting the appointed members of the board were appointed for 2008, they are:

Clare Anthon and Julie Manhold

Thank you for your service to our club in 2007 to the same members listed above, as these are the same people that performed these functions for us last year. Julie Manhold and Clare Anthon had stepped in midyear ’07 as “The Social Butterflies” taking over Hospitality and being part of Social, assisting VP of Social Events, Russ Manhold, as his committee. Together they make sure the membership has fun in ways other than diving. In January we went to a Panthers Ice Hockey Game after dinner at the Quarterdeck. It was loads of fun. Keep an eye out in this and future newsletters and on the web site to keep informed about all the fun they have in store for us in the coming months.

For this newsletter, the web site, scrapbook and photography we would like to ask all members to share submission material with Bob Weybrecht and Carol Schurtz. This helps us get the news out there about how much fun we have above, over and under the seas.

Our first official Local Dive was scheduled for January 26th. Larry Baum set up a dive to go check out the Lemon Sharks. Unfortunately, for a number of reasons, the dive was canceled. Stay tuned for the next local dive.

If you haven’t taken care of your dues for 2008 please let this serve as a reminder. Mary is waiting anxiously to hear from you.

Our February General Meeting will be February 7th. As usual it is at the Emma Lou Olson Civic Center/Pompano Beach Civic Center in Pompano Beach. Social starts at 7 PM with the meeting starting at 7:30 PM. Before the meeting there is a group that gathers around 6 PM at Pat’s Place Sports Bar and Grill for some dinner, drinks and camaraderie.

Hope to “sea” you soon.

Local Diving
                 With Larry Baum

As many of you know, Captain Craig, dive master Linda, and the Starfish Enterprise, http://www.idivestarfish.com, traditionally have an Easter Sunday morning dive, where everyone dives for Easter eggs (painted rocks). After the dive, the eggs are traded in for prizes. It's always a Club favorite and sells out quickly.

This Easter, Sunday, March 23 will be no exception. Let me know if you'd like to join us for this dive. I'm particularly excited as I'm hoping this will be one of my first times back in the water since my health "incident" last year. It's an 8 am dive, 7:30 am show, with the cost at $47 per diver (which does not include tips). Air tanks at $7 each and Nitrox at $14.

As always, let me know and I'll start a list and keep everyone informed of the details as we get closer to the dive.

Social Activities

If you enjoy social activities, indoors or outdoors, and you have an event that USAers might find interesting, contact the Social Butterflies. Check USA's Calendar web page for a complete listing of club events for 2008. Click on any listed social event link for additional details and photos.Smokey Bones_1

USA's Social Butterflies, Julie Manhold and Clare Anthon, have agreed to take on additional dive club responsibilities, filling the vacant Hospitality position on USA's Board of Directors. Look for them at every USA general membership meeting.

QDeckJanuary 10th, seven USAers met at Smokey Bones BBQ and Grill in Boca Raton. The group wined and dined on sumptuous barbecue favorites while enjoying animated conversation, before driving less than a mile to USA's January board meeting hosted by Larry Baum.

January 12th, fourteen USAers and guests gathered at the Quarterdeck Seafood Restaurant & Bar in Plantation for dinnerHockey_1 and drinks, followed by a short drive to the BankAtlantic Center for an ice hockey game between the Florida Panthers and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Even though our home team lost, the group enjoyed great food, excellent service, and center-ice seats offering a panorama view of the arena.

Bring your checkbook and sign up for USA social events at the February 7th general membership meeting.
