Program for March 6th

SEA SIGNS

RogerLathamRoger Latham, a PADI Instructor from W Palm Beach is a strong proponent of Sea Signs, a spinoff from AmerSlan, (American Sign Language) which was adapted for Scuba Divers. He will discuss the sign language, demonstrate some of the useful signs and discuss how it can be of significant use to a diver. If you have ever tried to get a message across to a dive buddy and failed, this program is for you. It goes way beyond “Out of Air” , ”This way”, “Up”, and “Shark”. He will also tell us where and how we can find instruction in Sea Signs as well.

We have a fun and informational speaker for March that will discuss with us underwater signing for divers. It is interesting to see how many different signs you can see among divers for the same thing as you go out on trips both local and overseas. I think I will enjoy seeing if there are a few new ones that we can pick up and use.

Our Social Butterfly-fish (also know our Hospitality Committee) and our VP of Social have been keeping us busy and it appears they plan to keep us busy for months to come. Check out the calendar to see what they have in store for us. Horseback riding is planned for March and we have a few spots left. Don’t get left out, this should be a great deal of fun. They have us lunching at Scruby’s BBQ and Ribs afterwards, sounds rather appropriate to me. The Social Butterflies would like to remind everyone that no experience is necessary. The stables will go over things with us and then match us to horses. There are some fun stories to be heard about this match up process from a ride past that perhaps we can urge out of our Social Butterflies or VP of Social at lunch.

A group of divers will be headed out the middle of the month to Utila aboard the Utila Aggressor. Let’s wish them fair winds and following seas and lots of Whale Shark sightings. We have Fiji coming up in May. Signups are being taken now for our July trip to San Salvador, Bahamas. I am looking forward to this trip and am getting close to counting down the days. Of course the Dry Tortugas trip will be coming up in August, an annual favorite.

The annual Easter Egg Hunt off of the Starfish will be Easter Sunday. This will be the return to diving for our trusty VP of Local Diving, Larry Baum, after being out of the water for nearly a year. A big thank you to Larry and his lovely wife Janet. Although Larry has been out of the water for the year he has been showing up to wish us bon voyage on each of the local dives bringing yummy goodies. Janet makes wonderful brownies and cookies for the local dive trips, she has us so spoiled.

Our March Meeting will be held on March 6th at the Emma Lou Olson / Pompano Beach Civic Center. Social begins at 7:00 PM with the meeting starting at 7:30. Before the meeting there will be a group at Pat’s Place for dinner, drinks and camaraderie. We gather around 6-ish. Join us!

Hope to “sea” you soon.

Local Diving
                 With Larry Baum

As many of you know, Captain Craig, dive master Linda, and the Starfish Enterprise, http://www.idivestarfish.com, traditionally have an Easter Sunday morning dive, where everyone dives for Easter eggs (painted rocks). After the dive, the eggs are traded in for prizes. It's always a Club favorite and sells out quickly.

This Easter, Sunday, March 23 will be no exception. Let me know if you'd like to join us for this dive. I'm particularly excited as I'm hoping this will be one of my first times back in the water since my health "incident" last year. It's an 8 am dive, 7:30 am show, with the cost at $47 per diver (which does not include tips). Air tanks at $7 each and Nitrox at $14.

We were given 12 seats for the Sunday, March 23 Easter dive and we have filled all those spots. However, we often get cancellations from our divers who have signed up and I would be glad to start a waiting list for the Easter dive. Please let me know if you're interested and I'll put you on the list (and let you know asap if we get a cancellation).

Thanks for all your support of local diving.

February 9th, thirty USA members and guests gathered at the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum in Dania Beach for a full day of interesting activities. At 10:15 AM, the group viewed "Sharkwater", a 90-minute HD video documentary depicting the decline of shark populations around the world. By noon, the group was enjoying lunch next door at the Islamorada Fish Company. After lunch, the group returned to the Dr Ray with Dr Sam Gruber_1_1_1IGFA facility for a self-guided museum tour. At 2:00 PM, the group relocated to the lecture hall for a presentation by renowned shark expert Dr. Samuel H. Gruber. Coincidentally, the Monterey Bay Aquarium was Group at lunchpresenting a program at the IGFA named "You, Me and the Sea" that identified Ocean-Friendly seafood. The exhibit offered free samples of Ocean-Friendly seafood that included farmed mussels, Atlantic herring, wild Alaska Salmon, Hall of Fame vistafarmed Bay Scallops and Albacore Tuna.

February 21st, five USAers met at the Pines Ale House in Pembroke Pines for dinner and drinks before attending the monthly USA board meeting, hosted by Russ and Julie Manhold at their Miramar home.

February 23rd, seventeen USA members and guests traveled toGuided Ecotour group West Palm Beach for a Guided Ecotour of the South Florida Water Management District's Stormwater Treatment Area 1-East, located on Southern Boulevard west of the South Florida Fairgrounds. Tour guide Susan Toth met the group at 10:00 AM and assigned participants to car pool in four vehicles. The entourage followed a meandering route through the STA, comprised of seven cells that capture and process stormwater runoff, removing phosphorous concentrations before the treated water empties into the Everglades and, eventually,Picnic group A our Florida coastalPicnic group B waters. STA's are a haven for wildlife including alligators, roseate spoonbills, whistling ducks, white storks, little blue herons, eagles and hawks. At about 12:00 noon, the Guided Ecotour ended and the group relocated two miles east on Southern Boulevard to Loxahatchee Groves Park where everyone enjoyed a picnic lunch and stimulating conversation.
