BLEACHWATCH BleachWatch - - - - A program to understand climate change and our reefs. BleachWatch, coordinated by Mote Marine Laboratory, is part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary's (FKNMS) bleaching response plan, aimed at early detection to mass coral bleaching. "We use reports from BleachWatch observers, sea surface temperature data and satellite images to prepare regular Current Conditions Reports that help sanctuary managers assess and respond to coral bleaching, said Modeled after a successful program used by Australia's Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, the program relies on two levels of volunteers. The BleachWatch professional level is for volunteers that visit the same reef sites on a regular basis - for instance, crew on a dive or snorkel boat. BleachWatch professionals undergo a The Presentation will include basic information on how to identify corals and distinguish between coral disease and bleaching, as well as instructions on how to complete data sheets. Things have been busy with overseas diving, too, so busy that a pre-trip and post-trip party were held in tandem. A group had just returned from Utila and another is preparing to depart for Fiji in May. Spots are still available for our trip to San Salvador, Bahamas in July and the Dry Tortugas trip will be coming up in August, an annual favorite. As for Local Diving our own VP of Local Diving, Larry Baum, has returned to diving after a long hiatus. It is wonderful to have him back on the boat. As always, we are enjoying the dives and the goodies he and his lovely wife Janet spoils us with. Our May dive was sold out at last check but check with Larry regarding a waiting list and stay tuned for future opportunities to join in on the local dives with a great bunch of divers. Our May Meeting will be held on May 1st at the Emma Lou Olsen/Pompano Beach Civic Center. Socials begins at 7:00 PM with the meeting starting at 7:30 PM. Before the meeting a group gathers at Pat’s Place enjoying dinner, drinks, stories and friendship. We gather around 6-ish. I hope you will join us!
Hope to “sea” you soon. Glada Blench
Saturday May 24th
Now that I'm back in the water I want to dive as often as I can........
The dive will be $57 (costs have gone up I'm afraid) which includes the two tank dive and goodies. As always, tips are at the discretion of each diver. The Diversity holds 15 people, which is great from a dive comfort standpoint, but it also means that everyone will need to sign up early. The boat leaves at 8:00am, Saturday, May 3, so we'll all need to be there by 7:30am. Here's a link for a map to the boat: http://thediversity.com/images/divmap.jpg Click on the link for a review of our most recent LOCAL DIVE. Looking forward to diving with everyone again in 2008!!!

After checking in with Membership, Hospitality greeted our guests and guided them to the Hospitality Hut to fill out a brief questionnaire. Here, guests outlined their diving level and experiences. We were happy to welcome back former member Wayne Lindeman. Wayne was certified in 1970 in the Great Lakes area with dives "too numerous to mention". Susan Glazer, wife of new member Mark Glazer, also attended the meeting. Susan will be joining Mark on our upcoming overseas dive vacation to the beautiful island of San Salvador. We also welcomed Dave Zeller, a visitor from the South Florida Underwater Photography Society. Dave has an instructor rating, was certified in Pennsylvania in 1972 and would enjoy diving the Great Barrier Reef. Holly, a guest of our Club Secretary, Robert Schearer, told us she is an instructor with over 500 dives. Holly's favorite dive sites are in Cozumel and Belize. Please be sure click on the calendar button for details regarding our club's upcoming local and overseas dive trips along with our numerous non-diving social events. You may take a peek at many of our past diving and non-diving club activities by clicking on the photo gallery button. You'll see lots of happy faces in the photo gallery. USA welcomes our newest members and guests and wish "Happy Diving" to all.
