Program for May 1st

BLEACHWATCH

BleachWatch - - - - A program to understand climate change and our reefs.

BleachWatch, coordinated by Mote Marine Laboratory, is part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary's (FKNMS) bleaching response plan, aimed at early detection to mass coral bleaching. "We use reports from BleachWatch observers, sea surface temperature data and satellite images to prepare regular Current Conditions Reports that help sanctuary managers assess and respond to coral bleaching, said Cnat_ComparisonBleachWatch program coordinator Cory Walter." By tracking bleaching and recovery of reefs throughout the Florida Keys, Mote and the FKNMS hope to learn more about why corals bleach and their resilience to these events.

Modeled after a successful program used by Australia's Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority, the program relies on two levels of volunteers. The BleachWatch professional level is for volunteers that visit the same reef sites on a regular basis - for instance, crew on a dive or snorkel boat. BleachWatch professionals undergo a Observershort training session and then submit regular reports on their dive or snorkel site. BleachWatch at the community level encourages reports from divers and snorkelers who make only occasional reef trips or do not routinely visit the same site.

The Presentation will include basic information on how to identify corals and distinguish between coral disease and bleaching, as well as instructions on how to complete data sheets. Click on the link for more information: 2008 Bleach Watch Project.

For more information come and meet Cory Walter, Mote Staff biologist, at our meeting.

VP of Social and our Hospitality Committee/our own Social Butterflies have been hard at work and it has been paying off with lots of fun. We spent a day at a wonderful park in Palm Beach just last weekend. There was bicycling, fishing and hiking and Theresa P. was there enjoying herself on her roller blades, quite impressive. At the nature center we were able to enjoy an event that was being held in honor of Earth Day. We got to see owls (3 different species), a panther, a skunk, snakes, fish, frogs and some of the group got to watch some white tailed deer behind the nature center from a blind. After all this fun we got together and enjoyed a picnic lunch and cook out. Check out the calendar to see what they have in store for us coming up.

Things have been busy with overseas diving, too, so busy that a pre-trip and post-trip party were held in tandem. A group had just returned from Utila and another is preparing to depart for Fiji in May. Spots are still available for our trip to San Salvador, Bahamas in July and the Dry Tortugas trip will be coming up in August, an annual favorite.

As for Local Diving our own VP of Local Diving, Larry Baum, has returned to diving after a long hiatus. It is wonderful to have him back on the boat. As always, we are enjoying the dives and the goodies he and his lovely wife Janet spoils us with. Our May dive was sold out at last check but check with Larry regarding a waiting list and stay tuned for future opportunities to join in on the local dives with a great bunch of divers.

Our May Meeting will be held on May 1st at the Emma Lou Olsen/Pompano Beach Civic Center. Socials begins at 7:00 PM with the meeting starting at 7:30 PM. Before the meeting a group gathers at Pat’s Place enjoying dinner, drinks, stories and friendship. We gather around 6-ish. I hope you will join us!

Hope to “sea” you soon.

Local Diving
                 With Larry Baum

Saturday May 24th
Diversity
Deerfield Beach
Show @ 7:30 AM Go @ 8:00 AM
Cost $57

Now that I'm back in the water I want to dive as often as I can........
Once again, May is one of those busy months with an Overseas Club Dive, scheduled dives by other clubs that our members participate in, and a possible month end Raft-Up. So, to avoid conflicts (best I can) and get everyone back in the water as early as possible, I scheduled our next dive with Capt Tony and The Diversity, http://thediversity.com/index.htm.

Diversity-1

The dive will be $57 (costs have gone up I'm afraid) which includes the two tank dive and goodies. As always, tips are at the discretion of each diver. The Diversity holds 15 people, which is great from a dive comfort standpoint, but it also means that everyone will need to sign up early. The boat leaves at 8:00am, Saturday, May 3, so we'll all need to be there by 7:30am. Here's a link for a map to the boat: http://thediversity.com/images/divmap.jpg

Click on the link for a review of our most recent LOCAL DIVE.

Looking forward to diving with everyone again in 2008!!!

Social Activities

If you enjoy social activities, indoors or outdoors, and you have an event that USAers might find interesting, contact the Social Butterflies. Check USA's Calendar web page for a complete listing of club events for 2008. Click on any listed social event link for additional details and photos.ClareandKathi

April 10th, six USAers met at Bonefish Mac's Sports Grille in Lighthouse Point for dinner and drinks before attending USA's monthly board meeting, hosted by Ray McAllister at his residence in Lighthouse Point.

April 19th, twenty USAers and guests gathered at Okeeheelee Park in West Palm Beach for BEAKS and BIKES and HIKES and KathiJulieClare BITES. The all day outdoor event featured special events at the Nature Center, celebrating Earth Day. Many brought bikes and enjoyed exploring Okeeheelee's many hills and dales. One USAer brought Rollerblades and worked up an appetite, skating around the huge county park. Others rented paddleboats for an excursion around Okeeheelee's expansive Clear Lake. Some relaxed while fishing for Bass in the well-stocked lake. USA's Social USA banner2Butterflies fired up two charcoal grills, affording barbecuers an opportunity to display their cooking prowess.

Registration and sign up for 'Friday Night Lights', USA's 4th of July three-hour fireworks cruise, is progressing nicely. Nineteen members and guests have paid $20, securing a place on the 'Lady Go Diver', departing from Deerfield Beach at 6:45 PM. About twenty spots remain available for 'Friday Night Lights'.

Bring your checkbook and sign up for USA social events at the General Membership meeting.

Upcoming social events include:

  • June TBA Moonlight Turtle Walk, Gumbo Limbo Park, Boca Raton
  • July 04 (Fri) 4th of July Fireworks Cruise, Deerfield Beach

Hospitality Hut

Clare & Julie Hospitality HutUSA's Hospitality Coordinators are happy to report that four guests were introduced at the April 3rd USA Dive Club General Membership meeting.

After checking in with Membership, Hospitality greeted our guests and guided them to the Hospitality Hut to fill out a brief questionnaire. Here, guests outlined their diving level and experiences.

We were happy to welcome back former member Wayne Lindeman. Wayne was certified in 1970 in the Great Lakes area with dives "too numerous to mention". Susan Glazer, wife of new member Mark Glazer, also attended the meeting. Susan will be joining Mark on our upcoming overseas dive vacation to the beautiful island of San Salvador.

We also welcomed Dave Zeller, a visitor from the South Florida Underwater Photography Society. Dave has an instructor rating, was certified in Pennsylvania in 1972 and would enjoy diving the Great Barrier Reef. Holly, a guest of our Club Secretary, Robert Schearer, told us she is an instructor with over 500 dives. Holly's favorite dive sites are in Cozumel and Belize.

Please be sure click on the calendar button for details regarding our club's upcoming local and overseas dive trips along with our numerous non-diving social events. You may take a peek at many of our past diving and non-diving club activities by clicking on the photo gallery button. You'll see lots of happy faces in the photo gallery.

USA welcomes our newest members and guests and wish "Happy Diving" to all.
