Program for July 3rd

July Meeting Canceled

Due to a Pompano Beach Centennial Celebration at the Civic Center on July 3rd, there will be no meeting in July. The next meeting will be on Thursday, August 7th.

In the way of meetings for July we have none. The City of Pompano is having their Centennial Celebration and we have opted to forgo our regular general meeting that night as the dates coincided and parking would be an issue. We do not have a board meeting scheduled for the month of July, but are scheduled for one in August.

Our Social Butterfly-fish (also know our Hospitality Committee) and our VP of Social have been keeping things happening. They just finished a turtle walk, which was sold out and yours truly waited a bit too long and missed out. They met for dinner and drinks at Flannigan’s Guppies and then went on a turtle walk. They were privileged to witness a loggerhead lay her eggs. What an experience. For the 4th of July they have chartered and sold out spots for a fireworks cruise aboard the Lady Go Diver.

I just today got a note from Larry Baum that tells us we have 15 scheduled for the 6th of July on our local dive with South Florida Dive Headquarters. We will be using the Hillsboro Inlet location also known as the Fish City Marina. I love this location for ease of parking. We are scheduled for a wreck dive of the Scutti / Tracey followed by a drift dive.

A group of 16 divers will be headed out the July 12th on our trip to San Salvador, Bahamas. We will be staying at the Riding Rock Resort and plan to have a great time. I am looking forward to this trip and am counting down the days. Of course the Dry Tortugas trip will be coming up in August an annual favorite for our spear-fishermen and bug hunters.

Our next meeting will be held on August 7th at the Emma Lou Olsen/Pompano Beach Civic Center. Social begins at 7:00 PM, with the meeting starting at 7:30 PM. Before the meeting there will be a group at Pat’s Place for dinner, drinks and camaraderie. We gather around 6-ish. Join us!

Hope to “sea” you soon.

We will be leaving from SFDH's Hillsboro Inlet location (also called Fish City Marina), preferred by most of our members for it's good parking and access to the boat. http://www.southfloridadiving.com/inlet.htm We'll be diving on the Coral Princess.
The first dive is scheduled on the Scutti and Tracey wrecks, with the second dive a drift/reef dive.

For those who cannot dive that weekend don't forget the RAFT UP scheduled for Saturday, July 26. Also, I will look to schedule another Saturday dive in July).

Social Activities

If you enjoy social activities, indoors or outdoors, and you have an event that USAers might find interesting, contact the Social Butterflies. Check USA's Calendar web page for a complete listing of club events for 2008. Click on any listed social event link for additional details and photos.

Wednesday evening, June 25th, fifteen USAers andFlanigan's dinner group guests gathered in Boca Raton for a Sunset Dinner and Moonlight Turtle Walk. At about 7:00 PM, participants met at Flanigan's Guppy's Bar & Grill to enjoy food and drink before car caravaning the short distance north on A1A to Gumbo Limbo Nature Center.

By 9:00 o'clock, our group nestled into a cozy classroom for a comprehensive briefing on the seven species of sea Gumbo Limbo groupturtles, including Loggerheads. We learned that, over the last 30 years, our world's sea turtle population has diminished by startling numbers.

At about 10:00 PM, Dr. Kirt Rusenko, Gumbo Limbo's Marine Conservationist, alerted our group by 2-way radio that he located a large female Loggerhead turtle, laying her eggs on a beach near Spanish River Park.  Within 30-minutes, our group was walking on the beach in total darkness, careful not to alarm other sea turtles swimming toward shore.

What happened next was absolutely surreal. Dr. Rusenko stood adjacent to the female Loggerhead,Turtle laying eggs some 15 yards from the water's edge, bathing the huge reptile in bright red light.  Sea turtles cannot see red light.  Between the Loggerhead's rear flippers was a deep hole, clearly illuminated by Dr. Rusenko's white LED flashlight.  Our group formed a tight semi-circle and watched, with absolute fascination, as the female sea turtle dropped about 100 soft, leathery white eggs into the sandy pit.  By 10:30, the Loggerhead pushed and swept loose sand over her eggs, then labored to pull her heavy and cumbersome body back into the dark sea.

July4thRegistration and sign up for 'Friday Night Lights',  USA's 4th of July three-hour fireworks cruise, is complete.  Forty-five USAers and guests purchased $20 tickets, securing a seat on the 'Lady Go Diver', departing from Deerfield Beach at 6:45 PM.  It's still not too late to get your name, and the names of your guests, on the Wait List.  Call Russ Manhold at 954-435-0981.

Hospitality Hut

Clare & Julie Hospitality HutSalutations from the Hospitality Hut Twosome. Wow! "The Hut" sure has been busy meeting and greeting new and returning guests.

The June general meeting was even busier than May. We are excited to report that we introduced 9 guests to the general membership.Cliff Abrams (R)

Once again, "The Pelican" newspaper was responsible for sending us a guest. Cliff Abrams (R), was certified right here in Pompano in 1979.

Marlena Botes (R)

The "Pompano News" sent us Marlena Botes (R). Marlena has been diving since 1980 and was certified in Chicago. Brrrrr.

Mary & Frank Burnside

Our own Club Treasurer, Judy Townsend, brought first-time guests Mary and Frank Burnside. Mary was certified in Connecticut in 1981 while Frank waited until 1990 to take the plunge, while he was in Puerto Rico.

Margie & Mike HanrattyIt's always a pleasure to welcome back former members. We did just that when Margie and Mike Hanratty elected to attend the June meeting. Margie and Mike were both certified in 1990 right here in Florida. In the past, this terrific twosome was great fun at general meetings and non-diving social events. They also participated in local and overseas diving. We are so glad to hear that they have re-applied for membership.

Dan Malone (M)

Thanks to Kim Whaley for inviting Dan Malone (M) to the USA Dive Club. Dan is not presently a diver, but who knows, he may decide to take a lesson or two and join our diving escapades.

Andrea Osterode (L)

Marc Cohen (Marc, where's Werner?) escorted Andrea Osterode (L) to the meeting. Andrea made her diving debut in Barbados in 1996.

And last but not least, Robert Bettarel (camera shy) attended his second meeting. Robert owns a boat and thinks maybe we will make a diver out of him yet!

Please be sure to click on the calendar button for details regarding our club's upcoming local and overseas dive trips along with our numerous non-diving social events. You may also take a peek at many of our past diving and non-diving club activities by clicking on the photo gallery button. You will see a lot of smiling faces in the photo gallery.

We are very pleased to welcome all the new faces and welcome back the familiar faces to our general membership meeting and wish "Happy Diving" to all.
