Program for August 7th

FIJI

Back in May, 14 Under Sea Adventurers traveled half way around the world to enjoy the beauty of the land and diving in Fiji. Thousands of pictures were taken by the trip participants, and tonight we share them with you. Rob Meyers drew the short straw and has put together a sampling of our experience. It’s the next best thing to having been there. And for those of us who were there, it’s sure to bring back fond memories.

A group of 19 of us just got back from a wonderful trip to San Salvador, Bahamas. Our home for the week was Riding Rock Inn.  I was lucky enough to be part of that group and had a great time; diving the walls and enjoying the good visibility, warm waters, calm seas and variety of underwater life as well as enjoying the company of our group both above and below the water.

We had the raft up this past weekend and as always that was a good time with diving, food and friends. Captain Roger’s boat won the award for cleaning the most monofilament off of the reef. The real winner here is the reef. I always appreciate something I see on nearly every local USA Club dive…… fellow club members leaving the reef as good or better than they found it.  This weekend is a local dive for USAers with Captain Craig and Dive Master Linda aboard the Starfish Enterprise. We are, at this point sold out, so contact Larry Baum to get on the waiting list. A couple of us are planning a night dive on the 23rd of August hoping to catch some coral spawning activity. The full moon is on the 16th. I read that this is the Full Sturgeon Moon, so maybe it will bring us luck. Corals are expected to spawn shortly after the August full moon, some say 7, 8, 9 or 10 days after the full moon. Most times this happens, I have heard after midnight, but we thought we’d venture into the water and see what we see. So, as you well know, it cannot be guaranteed but……..hey, I like night dives anyway. We will be sending out an email to USA members inviting them to join in.

Our next General Meeting will be August 7th.

General Meetings are held the first Thursday of each month at the Emma Lou Olson Pompano Beach Civic Center. Social starts around 7 PM with the meeting at 7:30. Before the meeting some of us will be gathering at Pat’s Place Sports Bar and Restaurant about 6 PM or maybe a little earlier for drinks, dinner and some friendly conversation.

Hope to “sea” you soon.

Local Diving
                 With Larry Baum

Saturday, August 2nd
Starfish Enterprise
Lantana
Show @ 7:30 AM, Go @ 8:00 AM
Cost $55

We have had some great Club dives over the summer. May with the Diversity, June with Parrot Island, and just last Sunday with South Florida Diving Headquarters. There will be more chances to get wet as the summer progresses. We have our Club RAFT UP July 26 and Glada is planning a night dive on August 23 (still tentative, but watch this space).

To keep us diving as often as possible I've planned our August dive for Saturday, August 2 at 8:00am with our good friends at Starfish Dive Charter and the Starfish Enterprise, http://www.idivestarfish.com. Starfish remains, if I may be so bold, the Club's favorite dive boat. The crew, Capt Craig and DiveMaster Linda, always providing a safe and entertaining morning.

Starfish

With just 14 divers the good news is that it's always a comfortable dive. The bad news is that this charter always sells out quick. So, let me know ASAP if you'd like to join us. The 2 tank dive is $55 which includes tax and goodies, but as always, the tip is up to each diver. Tips are not included in our Club price. Please remember to make the checks out to the Club, not me (shucks). Boat leaves Lantana at 8:00 AM, so it's a 7:30 AM show. Most folks are familiar with the Starfish, but if not, please take a look at their site or yell with any questions.

Look forward to diving with everyone on early August!!

Friday evening, July 4th, forty-five USAers and guests gathered in Deerfield Beach for 'Friday Night Lights', USA's 4th of July Fireworks P7040017Cruise aboard the Lady Go Diver. By 7:00 PM, the 3-hour cruise was underway in the ICW, heading north toward Boca Inlet. Everyone brought food and beverage to share and soon, the party was rockin' and rollin'. A few umbrellas sprouted on theP7040022 Lady Go Diver's main deck as overcast skies gave way to a light and persistent rain shower. Folks gathered in comfortable groups, seemingly undaunted by the conditions. Once in the ocean, the Lady Go Diver cruised slowly southbound, paralleling the shoreline, heading toward the fishing pier at Deerfield Beach. Dozens of marine law enforcement units, blue lights flashing, P7040010marshaled the ever-increasing flotilla of spectator vessels away from the pier to a safe distance offshore. Shortly after 9:00 PM, the light showers were replaced by clearing skies and a westerly breeze that flattened the seas. Then it began. From our perspective, the skyline from Fort Lauderdale to Delray Beach erupted with towering fireworks displays, illuminating the South Florida sky with brilliant colors. A few minutes later, fireworks were exploding directly overhead as rockets streamed skyward from the Deerfield Beach P7040004fishing pier. It was magical, watching fireworks blossom overhead while viewing a mirror image reflection in the calm seas below. For 30-minutes, our group thrilled to sights and sounds celebrating our nation's independence. Then, with a thunderous boom, and a blinding flash of light, it was over. Massive clouds of black smoke slowly drifted our way, then the moon and stars emerged as the last remnants of smoke floated seaward. Our slow cruise back to the dock provided time for USAers and guests to chat about the evening's events, and enjoy those last sips of fermented spirits. A good time was had by one and all. Upon IMG_3783returning to the dock at Deerfield Beach, USA Hall of Famer Larry Townsend was heard to say, 'If you missed it... you missed it.'

Sunday, July 6th, fourteen USAers gathered at Big Louie's Pizzeria & Restaurant in Pompano Beach for 'après scuba' delights after a 2-tank morning dive with South Florida P7040002Diving Headquarters, organized by Larry Baum. The usual 'local loonies' were present, along with visiting USA Hall of Famer Joe DellaFera and new members Augustus 'Gussy' Charles and Claudia Barrington. The food was excellent and the service outstanding.

August 2nd, join USAers for lunch, libation and Gemütlichkeit at the Old Key Lime House in Lantana following an early morning local dive aboard the 'Starfish Enterprise'.

Bring you checkbook to the August 7th USA dive club meeting at Emma Lou Olson Civic Center in Pompano Beach. After months of planning, USA's Social Butterflies plan to formally announce details for USA's Fall Party, scheduled for October 18th at Ellie's 50's Diner in Delray Beach. If you enjoyed 'Gilligan's Island' in 2007, you'll flip when you hear what's in store for 2008. If you can't attend the August meeting, look for e-mail promotions, announcing party details, in the days following.

  • October 18 (Sat) USA's Fall Party, The Flamingo Room at Ellie's 50's Diner, Delray Beach

Hospitality Hut

Clare & Julie Hospitality HutGreetings to all from the Hospitality Hut.

As you all know, due to the 4th of July event at the Civic Center, we did not have a July meeting. That being the case, we do not have any new guests to report.

We invite you, as members, to visit the Hut and help us greet our guests and make them feel welcome.

We will be back in action on August 7th and we look forward to seeing you and meeting lots of new folks.
