Program for April 2nd

Nicholas Gadbois, Project Manager, Land Based Pollution Sources.

VP of Programs

Alas, we were blown out of the water, so to speak last weekend.  John and Kathy Ficarra, our VPs of Local Diving, had us scheduled for a dive with South Florida Dive Headquarters.  The weather apparently had other plans and the dive was canceled.  The Ficarra’s are taking a waiting list for the ever popular Easter Egg Hunt Dive aboard the Starfish Enterprise with Captain Craig and Dive Master Linda.  Stay tuned to this newsletter and website and join us at the General Meeting as more local dives are announced.

Our VP of Social, Russ Manhold, and the Social Butterflies,  Julie Manhold and Clare Anthon, had us “Going Green in the Gutter” with Moonlight (blacklight) bowling.  This Saturday USAers will be canoeing and kayaking the Loxahatchee and lunching on the water. The fun never ends.

Larry LePage, our VP of Programs, has arranged Nicholas Gadbois, Project Manager, to speak to us regarding land based pollution sources at our April meeting.  Our General Meetings are the held the first Thursday of the month. The April meeting will be Thursday April 2nd at the Emma Lou Olson Pompano Beach Civic Center.  Social starts at 6:30 PM with the meeting at 7:00.

Hope to “sea” you soon.

Next local dive:

April 12th on the Starfish Enterprise in Lantana. It’s the annual underwater Easter Egg Dive. Each of the ‘eggs’ has a number on it. After the dive, the prize list is revealed. Always great fun and a chance to win some prizes.

So dust off those wet suits and check out your regulator and come and join us for a day of diving with friends.

Social Activities

If you enjoy social activities, indoors or outdoors, and you have an event that USAers might find interesting, contact the Social Butterflies. Check USA's Calendar web page for a complete listing of club events. Click on any listed social event link for additional details and photos.

Saturday afternoon, March 14th, twenty five USAers and guests gathered at Pompano Bowl to celebrate St. Patrick's Day and a festive evening event called "Going Green in the Gutter".

Group inside

By 5:00 PM, USA's Social Butterflies had divided the group into four teams, assigning each group to one of the six bowling lanes reserved for the USA event. The entire bowling ally was dark except for ultraviolet lights that illuminated everything with an erie glow.

Black light bowling

Although most everyone went Green in the Gutter, a few members and guests elected to spectate only, thereby Going Green in the Gallery.

Danny Michels

By 6:00 PM, the event was half over. Scores were low and spirits high as USAers and guests enjoyed Going Green in the Gutter.

Paula Wall

Several prizes were awarded including a special prize for Best Costume and highest score, awarded to USA's original leprechaun, Larry Townsend. The prize was a 'Diving Alligator' flag donated by USA Hall of Fame member Linda Caldwell.

Larry Townsend

By 7:00 PM, the bowling was over and the fun was just beginning. Our group of 'Gutter Greenies' included Clare and Tony Anthon, Glada Blench and Jon Spiegler, Linda Caldwell, Gail and Bob Cistrelli, Ronnie Farr, Kathy and John Ficarra, Linda Ianniello and Bob Weybrecht, Kurt Kohler, Mary and Larry LePage, Julie and Russ Manhold, Danny Michels, Bob Moon and Kathy Gray, Gary Sharp, Larry Townsend, Paula Wall and Joel Harris, and Kim Whaley.

Our goal in 2009 is to plan a full season of social activities that appeal to everyone. USA's Social Butterflies are always open and receptive to new and different ideas.

Hospitality Hut

ClareJulieGreetings from the Hospitality Hut

The "Hut" is happy to report two returning guests at the March 5th general meeting. Linda Bannister is an original member of the USA Dive Club. Linda recalls attending meetings at the Pompano Racetrack. We're so happy that she has returned. Linda has decided to join us as we canoe the Loxahatchee River on March 28.

We also welcomed back Mary Burnside. Mary was first introduced to the club by USA Hall of Fame member Judy Townsend. We will soon welcome Mary as a new USA Dive Club member who enjoys underwater photography.

First-time visitors Jocelyn and Herb Dekerf found us on the Internet. They have logged hundreds of dives and were certified in Florida's Keys. We look forward to seeing Jocelyn and Herb at our next meeting.

We suggest you go to our home page and click on the calendar button for details regarding USA Dive Club's very active diving and non-diving schedule. Also from the home page, click on the photo gallery button for a glimpse of our past outings. New social activity pictures are now being prepared and will be added soon.

We always enjoy welcoming back returning guests as well as greeting new ones.

Your Hospitality Hut Gals wish you all "Happy Diving".
