Larry LePage
For our May General Meeting Larry LePage, our VP of Programs has Alex Brylske from DAN coming to speak to us about “Diving Safety – Myths and Misconceptions”. John and Kathy Ficarra, our VPs of Local Diving, hosted our Easter Egg Hunt Dive aboard the Starfish Enterprise with Captain Craig and Dive Master Linda. 11 of us descended to the wreck of the Capt. Tony and the annual Easter Egg hunt was on as we searched for numbered rocks painted bright colors. These “eggs” were exchanged for prizes on the surface. The Ficarra’s started a new tradition; Kathy brought real Easter Eggs, hard boiled and dyed, and we had a contest tapping the eggs end to end with each other, trying to be the last one with one or the other end still unbroken. It was a hoot and the egg was tasty, too. Take a look around this newsletter and website. There are pictures of Kathy with her Easter Bunny ears on. Of course this newsletter and website as well as our general meetings are where to find information on future local dives. Kathy also made her now famous pineapple angel food cake and John passed around fresh cut pineapple. My mouth is watering now remembering it. Then, after that nice surface interval, it was time for our drift dive of Delray Ledge. We ended our day together with Easter brunch right there on the spot at the Old Key Lime House. A few of our members had won gift certificates for use at the restaurant and were able to use them right away. Hope to ‘sea’ you soon! Glada Blench

Saturday morning, March 28th, twenty three USAers and guests rendezvoused at Canoe Outfitters in Jupiter, Florida, prepared for a half-day of leisurely canoeing and kayaking on the Loxahatchee River. Everyone brought food and beverages to enjoy while paddling the canopy-covered river. Using a combination of canoes and kayaks, our group was underway by 10 AM. The weather was perfect with sunny, cool temperatures, and a mild breeze.
Our plan was to paddle slowly to Masten Dam, gather as a group, and relax while enjoying a picnic lunch on the Loxahatchee River. Masten Dam was the perfect place for a mid-day break. Several paddlers brought their canoes ashore while others relaxed at river's edge. A short path through the woods led to a clean chemical toilet, something that appealed to most everyone.
It was rumored USA's Social Buttterflies brought wine glasses and fermented spirits on the voyage. There was plenty of good food, enough to share with others. The picnic stop allowed time for USAers and guests to chat, get to know each other, and enjoy a variety of wildlife along the river. Wildlife sightings included a rare Duck Lipped Townsend, last seen March 14th at a Pompano Beach bowling alley with green hair and green eyebrows. Many believe this creature now resides in South Florida. Paddlers were also treated to an adult Limpkin, feeding a half-dozen hungry chicks a variety of large, juicy river snails.
A day on the Loxahatchee would not be complete without an alligator encounter. This canoe-sized gator stared intently as each paddler cautiously headed back to Canoe Outfitters. Our group of paddlers included Clare Anthon, Ronnie Farr and granddaughter Elle, John and Kathy Ficarra, Mark and Susan Glazer, Julie and Russ Manhold, Steve and Kathi McCutcheon, Bob Moon and guest Baoyan Jones, Theresa Pantanella and guest Nigel Evans, Gary Sharp and guest Linda Bannister, Larry Townsend, John Warren and Donna Walsh, Kim Whaley, Marie York and guest Don Chaleare. On Sunday, April 19th, twenty six USAers and guests gathered in Boca Raton for 'Food and a Flick', lunch followed by a movie matinee. At about 12:30 PM, our group met at TooJay's Original Gourmet Deli where manager John Kibbey escorted us to a large table with reserved seats.
By 2 PM, our group was car pooling to the Cinemark Palace 20 theater for a matinee performance of the smash hit "State of Play", a political thriller starring Russell Crowe, Ben Affleck and Rachel McAdams.
We managed to grab two rows of seats, finding time to grin for the camera minutes before the show began. After the movie, several USAers traveled south on I-95 to Deerfield Beach, for a 'sneak peek' of our May 7th USA Dive Club meeting location.
The Best Western Deerfield Beach Hotel & Suites offers a cozy meeting room, adjacent to the Newport Cafe, a friendly place to enjoy food and libations before the dive club meeting.
Hotel rooms and suites embrace an impecably clean pool and patio area, also adjacent to the cozy meeting room.
USAers Julie Manhold, Clare Anthon, Kathy Ficarra, Ray McAllster, Glada Blench and Ronnie Farr toast to a successful May 7th dive club meeting at the Best Western Deerfield Beach Hotel & Suites. Future 2009 social events include USA's 3rd Adopt-A-Street cleanup in Deerfield Beach; Moonlight Turtle Walk at Gumbo Limbo; USA's 4th of July fireworks cruise, and many other exciting activities including USA's Annual Fall Party on Saturday, November 14th. Our goal in 2009 is to plan a full season of social activities that appeal to everyone. USA's Social Butterflies are always open and receptive to new and different ideas.
Future social events include:

Special thanks to Hall of Fame member, Joe DellaFera for bringing his friend Pam to USA's general membership meeting in April. Joe now lives in Washington, NC. The couple were on an RV vacation in South Florida, and Pam decided to accompany Joe to the meeting. Pam told us that Joe spoke of his friends in the USA club often, and she felt as though she knew most of us. It was great to meet Pam and it's always nice to see familiar faces. We suggest you go to our newsletter's home page and click on the calendar button for details regarding USA Dive Club's very active diving and non-diving schedule. Also from the home page, click on the photo gallery button for a glimpse of our past outings. Until we meet again...... Happy Diving
