Our speaker for June Is Dr Kirt Rusenko who is a Marine Conservationist working for Boca Raton at the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center and specializing in Turtles. Kirt will give us a presentation on the sea turtles that use our shores for laying their eggs and on and the environmental hazards that effect their breeding. This presentation will prepare us for June 19th when our club will take a walk on the beach with Kirt to see the turtles in action. Don't miss this presentation and be sure and sign up for the Turtle walk on the 19th.
Larry LePage
Larry LePage, our VP of Programs, has Kirt Rusenko from the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center coming back to talk to us about turtles as our featured speaker for the June meeting on the 4th. Many of you may remember Kirt as he has been a speaker for our club in the past and led our group on last year’s turtle walk. Our VP of Social, Russ Manhold, and the Social Butterflies, Julie Manhold and Clare Anthon have arranged for a Moonlight Turtle Walk on the 19th. This will be the second year in a row this social and educational event has been offered. Last year the group got to witness a loggerhead laying her eggs. Let’s hope we will be that lucky again. Our local waters are warming up and John and Kathy Ficarra, our VPs of Local Diving are offering lots of opportunities to join in and enjoy the diving and camaraderie. Look elsewhere in this newsletter and web site as well as join us at our general meetings to find information on future local dives. Hope to ‘sea’ you soon! Glada Blench

Thursday evening, May 7th, USA held its' innaugural general membership meeting at the Best Western Deerfield Beach Hotel & Suites.
Before the meeting started, dozens of USAers and guests gathered in Best Western's Newport Cafe for drinks and tasty food.
Inside the Sawgrass Room, USAers and guests socialized while Larry Townsend sold Lobster Pot tickets.
With almost every seat taken, USAers and guests welcomed our newest member, Luis Monroy.
Our speaker was Alex Brylske, Senior Editor at Dive Training Magazine, DAN consultant, and PADI Course Instructor.
Sunday morning, May 17th, fifteen USAers and guests gathered in Deerfield Beach at 9:00 AM for USA's 3rd quarterly Adopt-A-Street cleanup event.
This event was part of Broward County's 2009 Great American Cleanup and a national program where over 2 million volunteers participate from March 1 thru May 31. The 1.2 mile length of Natura Blvd was divided into four sectors, i.e., northeast, northwest, southeast and southwest, thereby reducing walking distance to about 1/2 mile for each participant. Teams of 3 to 4 persons were assigned cleanup sectors. Green Team members donned bright yellow safety vests, hats and gloves. Each team was provided a large plastic trash bag and mechanical tongs to facilitate removing trash and debris from the roadside. By 10:00 AM, the cleanup was underway, two teams working north-to-south, the other teams working south-to-north. Earlier that morning, event organizers Russ and Julie Manhold hid 4 hard-boiled eggs along the roadside. Each egg was specially marked, identifying it as a special USA Dive Club Adopt-A-Street prize. The special eggs were found and later surrendered for genuine Adopt-A-Street prizes, in this case 4 reuseable Green Grocery Bags, each containing goodies like floating key chains and key chain bracelets.
By mid day, the four teams rendezvoused at Natura Blvd's half-way point, comparing size and shape of filled trash bags. Each bag was weighed and recyclable items were separated into clear plastic bags.
Time for a job-well-done photo then off to Yucatan Mexican Bar & Grill in Deerfield Beach for a group lunch. Adopt-A-Street participants included Tony and Clare Anthon, Linda Caldwell, Deb Devers, John & Kathy Ficarra, Dianne Johnston and Jack Nulty, Larry LePage, Russ and Julie Manhold, Kathi & Steve McCutcheon, Larry Townsend and Bob Weybrecht. USA's next quarterly Adopt-A-Street cleanup is scheduled for Saturday, August 15, 2009, on Natura Boulevard in Deerfield Beach. Our goal in 2009 is to plan a full season of social activities that appeal to everyone. USA's Social Butterflies are always open and receptive to new and different ideas. Future social events include:

Not only did we enjoy the first meeting in our new Best Western, Deerfield location, but we are also very happy to report that we introduced eight guests. Clara & Jorge Carajal, a charming couple from Weston, haven't even finished settling into their new home, but took the time to attend their first meeting. Clara is a rescue diver and Jorge is an instructor. Both were certified in 2003 and found us on the internet. We are extremely happy to report that Clara & Jorge made the decision to join the Under Sea Adventurers and have completed their applications. Welcome, once again, Sharron Chiapetta. Sharron was a member back in 2000. She attended the October 2008 meeting and visited us again in May 2009. We had the pleasure of meeting Joie Matthews, wife of member Michael Matthews. Joie is a new diver and has already applied for membership. We give her a warm USA welcome. Another couple, Evelyn & Steve Jurczak were introduced. Evelyn was certified in 2004 and Steve, a former Under Sea Adventurer, was certified in 1988. When Steve arrived at the Best Western, he was sporting his Under Sea Adventurer dress shirt from years past. Guest, Jeri Lynn Stetz, responded to our ad in the newspaper. Jeri, who has experience working with divers in the recompression chamber, is a non-diver, but was very interested in hearing the lecture on Diving Safety, Myths & Misconceptions, presented by Alex Brylske. Our own Dr. Ray McAllister invited Barbara Sutton. Barbara has been a certified diver since 1985 and looks forward to becoming a USA Dive Club member in the near future.
We hope all our guests enjoyed the fellowship of our members. We thank all of you for your interest in the Under Sea Adventurers Dive Club and hope to see you again. We suggest you visit our newsletter's home page www.usadiveclub.com and click on the calendar button for details regarding USA Dive Club's very active diving and non-diving schedule. Also from the home page, click on the photo gallery button for a glimpse of our past outings. Until next month, we wish you happy diving, warm water and flat seas!
